University of California Museum of Paleontology Does Groundbreaking Research With HDVR®

Palo Alto and Berkeley, California, September 30, 2013

Fovia, Inc., a world leader in volume rendering technology, announced today that it is working with the University of California Museum of Paleontology to uncover critical links in evolutionary biology. Dr. Brian Swartz, a paleontologist at the museum, is using High Definition Volume Rendering® in his macroevolutionary research, where the ability to visualize even the tiniest of details often provides essential clues to unlock ancient mysteries.

Over 500 researchers such as Dr. Swartz use Fovia’s proprietary HDVR® software and algorithms to create advanced protocols and imaging techniques for accelerating and expanding their research. HDVR is deployed by specialists in fields ranging from forensic pathology to neutron-scattering microscopy in more than 50 countries.

The University of California Museum of Paleontology uses CT and MRI scans on a wide variety of subjects, including coelacanths, lungfish, deep-sea sharks, walking catfish and giant salamanders. Dr. Swartz examines fossil animals and their living relatives to understand the origin of locomotion on land, and he uses HDVR to visualize and study these organisms in ways never seen before, including reconstructing the evolution of body muscles across the vertebrate water-land divide.

Dr. Swartz, whose affiliations include the University of California, Berkeley (University Lecturer, Department of Integrative Biology), the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (Senior Research Scientist and Advisor), and Stanford (Research Fellow, Millennium Alliance for Humanity and the Biosphere), has also worked with The National Center for Science Education, The Discovery Channel and the BBC. “I’m very excited about visualizing paleontological data in high-resolution 3D images using Fovia’s High Definition Volume Rendering software. It opens up new possibilities for advancing and sharing my work as an evolutionary biologist with scientific colleagues and the public, and the images are absolutely amazing!” said Swartz.

Ken Fineman, Chief Executive Officer of Fovia, added, “It is a privilege to work with researchers as dedicated as Dr. Swartz, who work tirelessly to understand and improve our world. An important part of Fovia’s mission is to facilitate scientific advancement in various fields through the use of High Definition Volume Rendering, just as Dr. Swartz has done.”
